If your Mercedes looks like it is sitting lower at the back than it used to, or it drops overnight and pumps itself back up on start-up, the rear air springs are the usual suspect. That was the case with this 2017 E-Class, which we sorted in the owner’s driveway in Glenhaven.
Mercedes’ AIRMATIC system uses rubber air bags in place of coil springs. Over time the rubber develops hairline cracks, air leaks out faster than the compressor can replace it, and the car ends up low, uneven, or with a suspension warning on the dash. Left alone, the compressor works overtime to keep up and can fail as well, turning a springs job into a much bigger bill.
We confirmed the leak, then replaced both rear air bags as a pair so the car sits level and the new springs age together. The photos show the car up on ramps for the job. Once fitted, the system was re-inflated and the ride height checked.
Symptoms worth acting on early:
- Rear of the car sits noticeably lower, especially after being parked overnight
- The car rises when you start it, then settles again over the day
- A “Suspension: stop, vehicle too low” or similar warning on the dash
- The air compressor running for longer than usual
