An older performance Euro can be a brilliant buy or an expensive lesson, and the difference usually comes down to what the previous owner did or did not do. This 2001 B5 Audi RS4 Avant, the original RS4 with its Cosworth-developed 2.7 litre twin-turbo V6, was inspected at the seller’s address in Georges Hall before the buyer committed.
A pre-purchase inspection on a car like this goes well beyond a walk-around. The 2.7T is a great engine, but it has known weak points that are expensive if missed: the turbos themselves, the coolant hoses and plastic fittings buried in the valley of the engine, timing belt history, and oil leaks from the cam seals and valve covers. On a genuine RS4 there is also the question of originality, and whether previous tuning has been done sympathetically. We had the airbox and air filter out to get eyes on the turbo inlets, checked for boost leaks and oil in the intake tract, and ran a full diagnostic scan for stored and cleared fault codes.
The buyer received a straight answer on what the car needed now, what could wait, and what to factor into the price. That is the point of the inspection: no surprises after the money has changed hands.
